After the lambs are born in spring sheep are send to the mountains where they spend the summer like wild animals, grazing freely. Every September the local group of farmers and horsemen go on the best horses to herd the sheep down from the summer pastures in the highlands down to “Réttir”.

I invite the experienced horseback rider to join me in the sheep roundup. It is a fun an challenging way of experiencing the mountains on horseback in the north-east of Iceland, and also it is a grand opportunity to keep this wonderful tradition alive.

Sheep Roundup normally takes place the 1st and 3rd weekend of September.
